University of California, Riverside’s tuition-free Farmworker Advancement Program combines early childhood education courses, English language development, technology training, advising, and hands-on experience while allowing participants to continue working and caring for their families. The example offers a useful way to think about how employment and training services can combine meaningful career goals with the resources and guidance participants may need. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) programs could use this model when reviewing their own education and training partnerships, identifying barriers that may prevent participants from completing training, or developing career pathways that include coaching, childcare, transportation, technology, or other practical supports.
