Urban Institute is hosting a discussion about the legacies of the deepest poverty in America and the mechanisms through which it persists. The discussion will explore the poorest places in the country – from Appalachia, the Cotton and Tobacco Belts, and South Texas – and examine the inequalities shaping people’s health, livelihoods, and upward social mobility. It will continue with a panel of experts on the importance of place and place-based solutions for supporting upward mobility from poverty. This event will take place on November 16, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET in Washington D.C., with the option to join virtually.

The National Association of Workforce Development Professionals will be hosting the Symposium from November 6 to November 8, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada with an option to attend virtually. The workshops will address critical issues faced by youth in today’s workforce by sharing innovative solutions and empowering strategies. There will be five different learning tracks for participants to choose from, including:

1. Priorities for Youth Workforce Development from DOL's Employment and Training Administration;
2. Technology and Digital Solutions;
3. Personal and Leadership Development for the Workforce Professional;
4. Career Counseling and Development; and

Climate change and climate-fueled extreme events like floods, wildfires, and heat waves are imposing significant financial costs on American households and families. Urban Institute is hosting an event in Washington D.C., with the option to join virtually, on September 29, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. EDT. This event will explore the causes and consequences of household financial stress attributable to climate extremes. It will feature a panel discussion with Natalie Grant, the Director of the Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness, about the household financial burdens imposed by climate change and opportunities to which households, communities, and policymakers must prepare and respond.

The National Association for Welfare Research and Statistics (NAWRS) Research Conference will take place from October 8 to 11, 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The conference’s theme is “Learning from a Shifting World: Opportunities and Challenges in the Delivery of Social Supports, ̋ and it will convene human service providers and researchers to share what they have learned from the past and what they are striving for in the future. Participants will share the research to practice connections of programs across the human services spectrum including cash and food assistance, child support, and childcare. There is a fee for registration.

Throughout the year, the National Indian Child Welfare Association hosts both in-person and virtual trainings to provide professional development opportunities that offer knowledge in the ever-changing field of child welfare. The September Training Institute will take place from September 12 to 14, 2023 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The different tracks include Positive Indian Parenting, Understanding the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, and Cross-Cultural Skills in Indian Child Welfare. Participants will experience large and small group learning, participate in facilitated discussion groups, and work through case-based exercises. There is a registration fee for participation.

Each year, ACT, Inc. (a mission-driven nonprofit best known for the ACT college entrance test) provides millions of students, job seekers, schools, government agencies and employers in the U.S. with learning resources, assessments, research, and credentials designed to help them succeed. ACT is bringing together experts from business, education, workforce, and economic development who are all striving to gain a competitive advantage in producing the workforce of tomorrow. The Workforce Summit will take place from October 4 to 6, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. Keynotes and sessions with national thought leaders will assist participants to fully prepare emerging workers, upskill current workers, build resilient economies, and create robust partnerships crucial for a thriving workforce community. The foundation of advocates’ role in Indian Country is built upon the Indigenous understanding of relationships and roles as relatives in the context of historical and ongoing dynamics of colonization. The key principles of advocacy come from Indigenous cultural beliefs and values and encompass concepts of resilience, trauma-informed approaches, and sovereignty. These are the themes of this workshop hosted by the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center from July 25 to July 27, 2023, both in-person in Aurora, Colorado and virtually. The workshop will focus on the dynamics and impact of intimate partner violence, particularly on Native women. Key topics include basic advocacy skills, confidentiality, and elements of shelter and other safe spaces. There is also a special session on COVID-19 mitigation best practices and indoor air mitigation tools. There is a registration fee for participation.

The American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) advances the well-being of all people by influencing modern approaches to sound policy, building the capacity of public agencies to enable healthy families and communities, and connecting leaders to accelerate learning and generate practical solutions together. APHSA is convening the 2023 Economic Mobility & Well-Being Conference in Long Beach, California from August 27-30, 2023. Over the course of three and a half days, participants can choose from 51 workshops to attend. There is a registration fee for participation.

The National Association of Workforce Boards will hold its annual conference in Washington, D.C. from March 21 to March 24, 2020. The conference features issue sessions, industry roundtables, workshops, and intensive technical assistance sessions with representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor and other partner Federal agencies. This year’s event will also include discussions of best practices and strategies from participants of the association’s Leadership Academy, as well as plenary sessions covering Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) reauthorization.

The Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will host a seminar on February 13, 2020 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. CT to discuss the effect of parental incarceration on families. A faculty member at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will present research exploring risk factors that influence how adults perceive and experience parenting, including attachment, relationship quality, and socioeconomic status.
