Classification of Registered Youth Apprenticeship Program Models
Youth apprenticeship is expanding, but programs can look quite different depending on how they are structured and which organizations are involved. This Urban Institute report identifies four models of Registered Youth Apprenticeship Programs: high school-aligned, college-aligned, career and technical education center-aligned, and other youth-focused programs. The report compares who participates in each model, the occupations they enter, on-the-job training, and starting wages. The report provides Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) practitioners serving young adults a clear picture of the apprenticeship options that may be available in their communities. It can help TANF programs and workforce partners think more intentionally about which apprenticeship models align with participants’ education, career interests, and employment goals.
